Wildfowl and waders peak numbers were as follows:-
Mute Swan: 182
Bewick’s Swan: 317 rising to 337
White-fronted Goose: 650 on 1st, some departures and 427 by the 31st
Greylag Goose: 450 including some larger birds
Barnacle Goose: 141
Mandarin Duck: 2
Wigeon: 7240 second highest site count,
Gadwall: 86
Teal: 1,700
Mallard: 1,234
Pintail: 290
Shoveler: 40,
Pochard: 725
Tufted Duck: 705 record count
Moorhen: 212
Coot: 419
Water Rail: c.20 birds wintering,
Little Grebe: 1
Great Crested Grebe: 1
Cormorant: 11,
Grey Heron: 2
Oystercatcher: 1 returned by 24th
Golden Plover: very low numbers until thaw, then 559 counted 17th,
Lapwing: 1,742
Dunlin: 100-400 daily, max.2,000 on 12th,
Ruff: 17 on 10th
Snipe: only small numbers
Curlew: 415
Black-tailed Godwit: 3
Redshank: 22
Great BB Gull: 157
Sparrowhawk: a female displaying and noted daily
Peregrine: 2
Kingfisher: 1
Scarcer birds:
Pink-footed Goose: a 1st winter all month and an adult on 1st only
Green-winged Teal: a male on 16th/20th
Lesser Scaup: a female 1st winter all month, a first for the reserve
Scaup: 2 1st winter males all month
Smew: a female on 6th/7th
Goosander: a female on 17th, 2 on 18th
Bittern: at least 2 birds present, possibly 3.
Hen Harrier: 1 on 18th
Marsh Harrier: a female seen intermittently all month
Merlin: 2 birds, a male and female on a few dates
Little Stint: 1
Jack Snipe: 1 on 24th
Water Pipit: 1 on 11th/24th
Waxwing: 1 on 3rd
Brambling: small numbers on the feeders
Siskin: 40
Yellowhammer: 1 on 6th
