19.2.11 BOC Young Ornithologists meeting |
a Stonechat |
a Reed Bunting |
20+ members with nothing better to do turned up for a morning's torturous birding at Avon's dullest site. We weren't disappointed.
Portbury doesn't do highlights so our best birds of the day were 2 Stonechats which inexplicably appeared at the pools, some Reed Buntings around the scrub, a brief Kingfisher and a calling Cetti's Warbler from the reeds.
Not much to shout about with the waders, just the resident Lapwings on the island and a few Curlew and Redshank out on the estuary mud. A male Shoveler was the best of a dismal duck scene.
Of course it will be all different in April.....it will be much warmer.
These stunning pictures were taken by the leader. If you'd like to capture cracking photos like these too, please contact us and we will pass on our wealth of knowledge and expertise.
