Antarctica February 2011

Club member John Bimson has recently returned from a birding trip to Antarctica. Sailing from Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina, the trip included regular landings and hikes to see wildlife on the South Shetlands, the Antarctic mainland and the various islands off the peninsula coast.

As well as birds (over 30 species), it was also a great trip for seeing seals (4 species) and whales (3 species).

A small sample of some of John's photos:
Antarctic Shag

Brown Skua

Southern Giant Petrel

Snowy Sheathbills

Many thanks John, sorry you didn't see any Fregetta petrels but we know of a banker site close to home which never fails to produce good seabirds......
