Sightings 15/4/11

Common Sandpipers on the increase....

BRISTOL:
Frenchay: At the Duchess Pond area, Buzzard pair mating, a Grasshopper Warbler, 3 Whitethroat, 5 Blackcap and 2 Chiffchaff (Christine Jones).

YATE:
Patch quiet, just 2 Whitethroat on the common of note (D Pearce).

CHIPPING SODBURY:
A reeling Grasshopper Warbler on the common today (W King).

ALMONDSBURY
Lower Knole Farm: 1 Partridge sp (probably Red-legged), a Grasshopper Warbler, 1 Reed Warbler, 2 Sedge Warbler and a Chiffchaff nest building (M Dadds).

SEVERNSIDE:
Patch highlights were: 68 Curlew (including a single migrating flock of 55 birds), 3 Common Sandpiper (new in) and 19 Wheatear (J Martin, per severnsidebirds).

PORTBURY DOCK:
This evening: 3 Gadwall, 11 Tufted Duck, a Buzzard, 1 Cetti's Warbler, a Jay and 2 Raven (S Hale).

PORTBURY WHARF:
A singing Nightingale in bushes near the middle hide this morning, reported by a visiting birder, our first of the spring.

Other reports from the north pool area: 2 Common Sandpiper, 2 male Yellow Wagtail, 2 male White Wagtail, a Lesser Whitethroat and 2 reeling Grasshopper Warbler (I Duncan, per SH).
No further reports of the Nightingale after the initial morning report.

PORTBURY:
3 Hobby over the village today (B Atkinson).

GORDANO VALLEY:

Sedge Warbler, Blackcap and Whitethroat

Weston Moor: Things picking up here, 2 Little Grebe, 2 Tufted Duck, 3 Buzzard, 2 Swallow, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, a reeling Grasshopper Warbler, 9 Reed Warbler, 8 Sedge Warbler, 10 Whitethroat, 10 Blackcap, 8 Willow Warbler and 4 Reed Bunting (PG Evans).

BANWELL:
Around the Winthill area, a flyover Peregrine and several Swallow, House Martin and Whitethroats appearing (J Thorogood).

BARROW TANKS:
This afternoon, 10 Shelduck and 9 Common Sandpiper (S Davies).

BREAN DOWN:
1 Tree Pipit, 3 Grasshopper Warbler and a Sedge Warbler (per westonbirds).

SOMERSET LEVELS:
Allan Chard out and about at some of the Somerset sites today.....and very trigger happy we are pleased to say.

Shapwick Heath: 3 Black-necked Grebe on Noah's lake (per SOS).

THE MENDIPS:
An excellent showing of Redstart reported at various sites here today: 7 at Velvet Bottom, 2 at Long Wood and singles at Black Rock and Netherwood (per SOS).

WEYMOUTH:
At PBO: 1 Fulmar, 2 Gannet, 18 Cormorant, 26 Guillemot, 2 Puffin, 3 Purple Sandpipers, 3 Whimbrel, 2 Redstart, 2 Stonechat and a Ring Ouzel (A Rhodes).
